Germany Family Session | The Barkmans

If you had told me five years ago that I would be back in this beautiful country with these wonderful people, I may not have believed you.

I might have hoped for it, but to see the adventure of life that God has brought Jason and I on is… amazing and unpredictable. Once we had settled in Ohio, I thought we were there for a while, maybe even a long while. When we discovered this job opportunity at Black Forest Academy last fall we were excited by all the possibilities of what a move might mean for us. One of those was that we would get to be close to friends who had previously been a part of my life, but who I really didn’t think I’d get to be near again.

Some of those friends are pictured here. Over five years ago we were all moving to Germany at the same time. We were all new to the mission field and all figuring out this new life together. They were one of the first ones who I told when Jason and I started dating. They are people who I consider family. If you have ever lived abroad for a long period of time, you know how strangers can become so close in a relatively short amount of time. This is one of the strange and beautiful things that comes with this sort of life – and I’m thankful for it every day. We need people. We are made to be in meaningful relationships.

Friendships like these don’t come around every day and I’m so thankful that we get this year to be near each other. I will be so sad when we have to say goodbye again, but for now we will treasure memories; evenings where we get to wander about our endearing village.

Let’s do this again in 5 years, guys! I like our tradition and I like you.
